From Raves to Riot-Gear: Kaskade?s Big Oops

This week brought us just another reminder of the power of Twitter to promote events. We?ve seen screaming Justin Bieber fans nearly trample each other after a tweet was sent revealing his whereabouts, but so far this is the first instant rave created by the micro-blogging service. DJ Kaskade had planned to show up at a film premiere in style. Rent a flatbed truck, pile a few PA speakers on board, then spin records live in the street. The idea was to get some energy going for the fans before he slipped into the premiere. I guess the path to hell is paved by good intentions. Just before the appearance, he tweeted a simple message: ?ME+BIG SPEAKERS+MUSIC=BLOCK PARTY!!!” That formula almost led to disaster. When fans learned that the DJ would be outside Grauman’s Chinese Theatre for what they thought would be a ?block party,? they started pouring in. Here?s how the DJ?s manager described the build-up: ?In two minutes there were 100 people, in three minutes there were 1,000 people, and by the time he got to the corner of Hollywood and Highland there were 3,000 people around me. Cars couldn’t go anywhere.? LAPD eventually showed up in full [...]

'Cowboys & Aliens' Star Olivia Wilde Happy To Revive Westerns

'I think we're bringing the Western to a younger audience in a major way,' star says.
By Sterling Wong, with reporting by Eric Ditzian

Olivia Wilde is no stranger to big-budget productions — she did, after all, star in last year's "Tron: Legacy." But the actress is adamant about the fact that her latest blockbuster, this Friday's much-anticipated "Cowboys & Aliens," is not like any other that has come before this summer.

"We are not a sequel, and we are not a superhero movie," Wilde explained to MTV News, undoubtedly referring to the string of well-known franchise movies that have come our way thus far this summer, from sequels to "Harry Potter" and "Transformers" to comic book fare like "Thor" and "Captain America." "So we're an original piece of material and that's really rare this summer."

OK, it's no superhero movie, but "Cowboys" is based on a comic book. Still, Wilde emphasized that the plot isn't exactly derivative. "Even though our title is based on a comic book, we're not actually a comic book movie. The story is completely original," Wilde noted. "Bob Orci and Alex Kurtzman, who wrote 'Star Trek,' wrote this story from scratch, just using the idea of the 'Cowboys & Aliens' comic book as inspiration."

Another way that "Cowboys & Aliens" stands out from the pack is the way it pays homage to a classic genre. "I think we're bringing the Western to a younger audience in a major way, which I think is really exciting, because I love Westerns, and I'm happy to introduce this genre to a bunch of people," Wilde said.

Of course, no good Western is complete without its rugged leading men. "We have Daniel Craig, who I think embodied Steve McQueen in this role," the actress gushed. "He's so badass it's unbelievable, and I think he's really, really smart and interesting in this role, and I think Harrison Ford pulls out his best performance in years. He's incredibly moving, and also very funny."

Check out everything we've got on "Cowboys & Aliens."

Kat Von D Storms Out on 'Good Day, L.A.' Interview

Kat Von D Storms Out on 'Good Day, L.A.' Interview

Kat Von D's Good Day, L.A. interview was over before it started. The L.A. Ink star stormed off the set on Wednesday after the show's hosts commented on her recent breakup with Jesse James

Good Day's hosts Jillian Reynolds and Jeff Michael introduced Von D, who was there to promote the new season of her TLC show, by saying, "She just broke up with fiancé Jesse James, but not before getting a tattoo of his childhood picture."

The next thing they knew, Von D, 29, had hightailed it out of the studio.

"Kat Von D just walked out of the building," Reynolds said minutes later. "I'm sure it's because of the Jesse James stuff, but … she talks about her personal life so much."

Reynolds claims she was not told that the split was off-limits for the interview. But it seems she and Von D were not on the same page, as the tattoo artist later took to her Twitter account to accuse the host of displaying a "lack of compassion [and] respect."

Reynolds quickly shot back in her own defense. "Why was it disrespectful?" she twittered in response. "We said you guys broke up … We showed the clip your publicist sent. It showed you and Jesse. Were we not supposed to mention you broke up?"

But Von D stuck to her guns and claimed it was the "disrespectful intro you guys 'snuck' in" that sent her packing. "Publicly disrespecting people for the sake of better ratings isn't something a person of compassion does," she wrote. "Good day."

Later that night, Von D posted a long, heartfelt manifesto on her Facebook page, titled "What Can I Say? I Suck," where she explained her feelings about her failed relationship and addressed why she walked out on the interview.

"Most of the time I’m good at rolling with the punches when things don't go as planned," she wrote. "But somehow, I allowed today to get the best of me...The accumulation of things this past year have been challenging in so many ways, but for the most part I found it easy to stay positive through it. At times I even surprised myself at how resilient I was to a lot of these challenges...Today was really hard for me. And no one's to blame other than myself. Never planned on walking away from this relationship, let alone the timing of things."

"Although my intentions were never to offend or hurt anyone’s feelings, this isn't an apology for walking out on a silly morning show interview this morning," she continued. "And this isn’t an attempt at justifying anything either. I don't expect people to understand, just like I can't expect myself to be able to please everyone at all times."

Watch how the whole went down on Good Day, L.A. here:

Disturbed Announce 'Indefinite Hiatus'

'I don't have a clear answer,' guitarist Dan Donegan says about the band's future.
By James Montgomery

After more than a decade together and some 13 million albums sold, Chicago heavy hitters Disturbed are preparing for an "indefinite hiatus," according to frontman David Draiman.

Draiman announced the news on his Twitter account, in response to a fan's question about rumors that the band was breaking up. And while he admitted that he has no idea what Disturbed's long-term plans are, their immediate future is pretty clear: "We haven't said that were breaking up. We simply do not know yet," Draiman wrote. "All I can say is we are going on an indefinite hiatus."

He added that he "can't really get into the reasons" why Disturbed were planning on taking a break, and wrote, simply, "Let's just say it's time." Draiman was equally mysterious about his future plans, writing that even if he wasn't singing with the band, he would "always be involved in music on some level."

Disturbed are currently touring North America with Godsmack and Megadeth on the 2011 Mayhem Festival, which wraps August 14 at the Cruzan Amphitheatre in West Palm Beach, Florida. They have a handful of South American dates scheduled for the end of the month, and then, as Draiman put it, the band is "done."

A spokesperson for the band could not be reached for comment by press time.

In an interview with Dallas radio station KEGL on Wednesday, Disturbed guitarist Dan Donegan clarified Draiman's remarks, saying, "Ever since the start of this band, we've always had a game plan of what comes next after each thing. So it's always been 'write, record, tour, let's go home for a month, let's start writing again, do the same thing all over again.' ... This time around, we just haven't really gotten to those discussions yet. We know that we're coming to the end of this touring cycle and we just haven't planned on what we wanna do next."

And, much like his frontman, Donegan didn't seem to have an idea about just when (or if) Disturbed would ever play together again, but added that the focus right now is to end things on a high note.

"I don't have a clear answer [about the band's future], because I'm not sure where everybody's head's at at the moment other than we're having a great time out on tour, we're going out big, we're carrying big production, we wanna end this on a big note," he said. "I think we're not ready to sit down and have the discussions of when we wanna get back together or if we're gonna. So we're kind of winging it."

Disturbed formed in Chicago in the late 1990s and broke through to the mainstream with bludgeoning hits like "Stupify" and "Down With the Sickness." They have released five studio albums, the last four of which — 2002's Believe, '05's Ten Thousand Fists, '08's Indestructible and last year's Asylum — each debuted at #1 on the Billboard albums chart.

Sound off about Disturbed's "indefinite hiatus" in the comments below.

Blake Shelton, Incubus Take Over Billboard Chart

Beyonce's 4 knocked down to #5 in third week out.
By Gil Kaufman

Blake Shelton was already a beloved country star before he became a reality-TV double-threat. But thanks in part to his breakout role on "The Voice," Miranda Lambert's better half is reaping plenty of benefits, including a #1 debut on the Billboard 200 charts next week for his new album, Red River Blue.

According to figures provided by SoundScan, Shelton's sixth studio album, his first #1 debut ever and highest-charting album to date, sold 116,000 copies last week. Just behind was the first album in five years from floaty rockers Incubus with If Not Now, When, which debuts at #2 on sales of 80,000. They lead a parade of new faces in the top 10 that also includes country singer Chris Young, whose Neon hit #4 in its first week (73,000), pop smoothie Colbie Caillat's All of You (#6, 66,000), head-bangers Theory of a Deadman's Truth Is (#8, 38,000) and the debut from the rebooted Sublime with new singer Rome, Yours Truly (#9, 35,000).

The rest of the top 10: Adele's 21 (#3, 77,000), Beyoncé's 4 (#5, 72,000), Jason Aldean's My Kinda Party (#7, 42,000) and Selena Gomez and the Scene's When the Sun Goes Down (#10, 33,000).

A couple of former top 10 dwellers fall to the second rung, including Eminem's Hell: The Sequel project under the Bad Meets Evil banner (#11, 30,000), Lady Gaga's Born This Way (down five to #13, 25,000) and Jill Scott's Light of the Sun (#14, 21,000).

The soundtrack to "Harry Potter: Deathly Hallows, Part 2" comes in at #25, while indie darlings Washed Out crash in at #26 with the excellent Within & Without (#26, 15,000). And it was a short trip to the top 10 for R&B crooner Lloyd, who plummets 39 spots to #49 in the second week for King of Hearts (9,000).

Over on the iTunes chart Caillat sits atop the album tally, followed by Shelton, Incubus, Adele, Sublime, Chris Young, Theory of a Deadman, Beyoncé, Bad Meets Evil and the unstoppable Mumford & Sons' Sigh No More.

LMFAO continue to rule the iTunes singles chart with their summer hit "Party Rock Anthem," which beats out Demi Lovato's "Skyscraper," Katy Perry's "Last Friday (T.G.I.F.)," Nicki Minaj's "Super Bass" and Hot Chelle Rae's "Tonight Tonight." Rounding out the top 10 at #6 are Lil Wayne's "How to Love," Pitbull's "Give Me Everything," Adele's "Rolling in the Deep," OneRepublic's "Good Life" and Aldean's "Dirt Road Anthem."

Things should be fairly static next week, with the only new titles including a new Kidz Bop Kids title and albums from 311, 3 Doors Down and DJ Khaled.

Britney Spears Hosts As Ke$ha, Jennifer Lopez, More Bring Wango Tango To L.A.

Pitbull, Matthew Morrison, Selena Gomez, Far East Movement and others filled the Staples Center on Saturday night.

LOS ANGELESBritney Spears makes headlines at concerts, even when she's not performing. That's probably why Los Angeles radio station KIIS FM tapped the pop princess to guest-host their annual Wango Tango music festival along with Ryan Seacrest on Saturday night at the Staples Center.

The bill was a balance of pop and hip-hop, with acts like Ke$ha, Jennifer Lopez, Pitbull, Ne-Yo, Selena Gomez, "Glee" 's Matthew Morrison, Lupe Fiasco, T-Pain, Jason Derülo, Far East Movement, New Boyz, Cobra Starship and newcomer Cody Simpson.

Backstage, the media room went into a frenzy when Spears arrived in a red, geometric-print dress and a beaming smile. Owning her "femme fatale" moniker, Spears worked the carpet for a few moments while all of the cameras in the room were pointing at her. It was the second red carpet appearance by Brit this week, after her Beverly Hills benefit on Wednesday night for the St. Bernard Project.

Check out photos from Wango Tango 2011.

Spears' Femme Fatale collaborator Ke$ha, who was returning to the festival for the second time, said that an onstage collab between to the two would have to require one thing.

"That would have to include me finding her and attacking her," Ke$ha told MTV News, with the best intentions. "I'm planning on pouncing her."

While that never happened, at least not onstage, Ke$ha delivered on her promise of a set heavy on her glitter gun. And she assured us she knew the dos and don'ts of handling that kind of firepower.

"Do not spray yourself in the face with it," she said. "Do spray everybody else with it. That's pretty much it."

While Joe Jonas wasn't performing at the show, he took a break from recording his solo debut to catch up with almost everyone backstage.

"I didn't see Britney backstage, just said 'hello' to a couple of my friends," Jonas said. "Backstage is always [full of] people, especially having it at the Staples Center this time, I think compared to all the way out in the desert, it changes everything."

Also happy to have Wango Tango in Los Angeles were locals Far East Movement.

"Man, we grew up literally a few blocks away from here, and you can only imagine basketball games being played here," Kev Nish said. "So to come in here as performers, to be able to do our songs in this arena is a little crazy. We used to pass out CDs a few blocks [away], so we're very thankful. And the lineup is nuts, so we're extremely excited to be a part of this lineup."

Chuckie Will Debut Michael Jackson Remix In Miami

Official 'Hollywood Tonight' remix coming to Miami Music Week.
By Akshay Bhansali

Photo: Jason Ano/ One and Only Productions

Leaving the South by Southwest festival, Lavo New York and Las Vegas' Marquee in his wake, house DJ Chuckie has his sights set on the week ahead. With Miami Music Week now upon us, Chuckie plans to seize the opportunity to debut new material. Fans will be tickled to know the Dutch producer has tracks in the can with Kelly Rowland and T-Pain, but when MTV News caught up with him Friday in New York, Chuckie shared the achievement of which he's most proud.

"I did a Michael Jackson remix, which was really scary — to touch Michael Jackson vocals," Chuckie said. "I did this remix for this track 'Hollywood Tonight.' I couldn't say it for a minute: The label called me, and they said, 'You can't say nothing about this. It's kind of a secret project.' It's gonna come out anytime now."

"Hollywood Tonight" was originally produced by Teddy Riley for Jackson's posthumous Michael album, and Chuckie's mix of the song will be the sole official remix of the track.

"I will play it Miami," Chuckie revealed. "I told them this is the best week to launch the remix. So it feels really good. I'm the only one remixing that Michael Jackson track, and they are considering it a single. For me, especially, it's an honor to remix the King of Pop because he died on my birthday."

So, will the mix be a thundering Chuckie Dutch house banger or will it have a melodic progressive house feel, like his Marquee remix of Diddy-Dirty Money's "I Hate That You Love Me"? Well, according to the "Let the Bass Kick" producer, fans will be getting a healthy dose of both.

"I had to bring in the raucous," Chuckie confessed. "Yeah, I did the Chuckie flavor, but then again, I wanted to make it really musical, so I went progressive (house) on it."

Chuckie will be performing twice at Miami Music Week: at the Cr2 Records Party at Wall Lounge on Wednesday, and then headlining "No Sugar Added" at Nikki Beach on Friday.

Are you excited to hear Chuckie's remix of Michael Jackson's "Hollywood Tonight"? Let us know in the comments below!

Ever since they were first announced, the O Music Awards have proudly proclaimed themselves the untraditional alternative to the staid world of red carpets, acceptance speeches and celebrity glad-handing.

And for further proof of that point, consider the following: Though the inaugural O Music Awards won't premiere until April 28, the first award will be handed out on Monday at 4 p.m. ET ... and it's a big one.

For weeks, fans have been voting for the Most Innovative Music Video through the O Music Awards official site, and on Monday — in a roundtable debate moderated by MTV News' James Montgomery — a winner will be crowned.

The O Music Awards Debate for the Most Innovative Music Video, presented by FUZE®, will stream live on OMusicAwards.com and MTV.com. Joining Montgomery around the table will be acclaimed video director Wayne Isham, Mashable's Brenna Ehrlich and some super-secret celebrity guests.

The Black Eyed Peas, Ke$ha, My Chemical Romance and more will also take part in the discussion about just what makes a video truly innovative, and the folks who are nominated for the award — a list that includes Arcade Fire, Robyn, OK Go and Andy Grammer — will also Skype in to make the case for why their video deserves to be named Most Innovative.

On Monday morning, the original list of 10 nominees will be whittled down to the top five vote-getters, and then, during the debate, our roundtable and the Internet audience will cut that list down to the final three. At the very end, we'll announce the winner of the very first O Music Award for Most Innovative Video.

The inaugural O Music Awards will stream live from Las Vegas at 11 p.m. ET/8 p.m. PT on OMusicAwards.com. Tune in to see who will reign supreme in categories like Most Viral Dance, Funniest Music Short and NSFW Music Video!

'New Year's Eve' Trailer

'New Year's Eve' Trailer

If you're single and not particularly fond of $200 open-bar specials, confetti and singing "Auld Lang Syne," New Year's Eve can been an epic bummer. But it can also be a wonderfully magical time when the A-list stars of Two and a Half Men and Glee hook up, Zac Efron embarks on an adventure with an older women who looks like a brown-haired Michelle Pfeiffer, and Justin Timberlake's ex is having a baby with the guy who does "Weekend Update" on Saturday Night Live.

If all of that sounds too good -- or weird -- to be true, you haven't watched the heartwarming teaser trailer for New Year's Eve, director Garry Marshall's thematic sequel to the 2010 rom-com hit Valentine's Day. Check it out below!

The film features an ensemble cast of A-listers the likes of which the world has never known. In the two-minute trailer alon, there are 20 big-name stars (yes, we counted), including Josh Duhamel, Sarah Jessica Parker, Ashton Kutcher, Lea Michele, Katherine Heigl, Jon Bon Jovi, Jessica Biel, Seth Meyers, Sofia Vergara, Robert De Niro, Hilary Swank, Ludacris, Abigail Breslin, Halle Berry, and the aforementioned Efron and Pfeiffer. Heck, even Ryan Seacrest cameos as himself. And somehow all of these characters' -- and more! -- stories will tangentially intersect over the course of one Dec. 31 in New York City.

Newly minted Two and a Half Men lead Ashton Kutcher and Glee starlet Lea Michele play platonic pals who, we're betting, realize that they like each other more than friends. Efron, meanwhile, is a bike messenger who helps Pfeiffer's character cross some things off her N.Y.E. bucket list. Jessica Biel and SNL's Seth Meyers play a couple hoping to have the first baby of the New Year -- with a little help from Halle Berry's nurse, of course. Duhamel is a tuxedo-wearing guy in search of his mystery soul mate (Sarah Jessica Parker perhaps?). And Robert De Niro reprises his role as sociopathic Travis Bickle from Taxi Driver. Kidding! He looks to be the sage New Year's Eve guru here.

How do all their stories intertwine? We'll have to wait until the movie hits theaters on Dec. 9 to find out. Sure, it looks like the movie hasn't met a rom-com cliche it doesn't love, but chances are it'll be a nice, sugary sweet holiday treat.

Adele Becomes Dance Music Muse At Tomorrowland Festival

David Guetta, Kaskade, Steve Angello talk to MTV News about why they couldn't get enough of the Brit's VMA-nominated 'Rolling in the Deep.'
By Akshay Bhansali

Adele
Photo: Paul Bergen/ Redferns

Now in its seventh year, the Tomorrowland Festival kicked off again in Boom, Belgium, this past weekend, and MTV News was there for the entire spectacle.

The dance music event started small but over the years it has ballooned into one of the most popular electronic dance music fests in existence. The Tomorrowland of 2011 had a fairy-tale theme and was made up of 14 colorfully dressed stages, which included set pieces like enormous replicas of mushrooms and trees; two of the stages were even dominated by an oversize skull and a sun. TL accommodated 30,000 campers on its "Dreamville" grounds, bringing the total draw for the weekend to upwards of 180,000, a figure that beat out Miami's Ultra Music Festival. (And what American festival can claim a Church of Love, where couples are encouraged to get some ... quality time?)

But perhaps what set this colossal European festival apart from the others this year was the sheer awesomeness of the talent flown in for it. Blockbuster dance music brands like David Guetta, Swedish House Mafia and Tiësto shared headlining duties with Belgian heroes Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike and 2manydjs (brothers Stephen and David Dewaele of Soulwax fame).

And if there was a recurring theme that played out over the course of three days, particularly on the main stage, it was that the dance music world has love for seven-time VMA nominee Adele. The remixes of the British soul singer's "Rolling in the Deep" were as varied as the performers themselves. Adele's a capella vocals were featured in too many sets to count.

Swedish sensation Avicii dropped his "Nothing Without Adele" bootleg; Swedish House Mafia played the Thomas Gold/ Hard Rock Sofa & St. Brothers/ Axwell mash-up "Blow Up in the Deep"; Laidback Luke dished out John Legend's Adele cover; and Kaskade unleashed Feenixpawl's "Rolling in the Deep" remix, just to name a few. Dance music's biggest stars had clearly found their muse at Tomorrowland.

According to some of the producers we caught up with at TL, it should come as no surprise that Adele is up for multiple Moonmen.

"Everyone loved it," Los Angeles-based producer Kaskade told us after his set, "from electronic fans to pop fans to country music fans. It's an amazing song, it's very well written and it's very remix-able."

"She's so special, so different from anything," French superstar Guetta offered. "['Rolling in the Deep'] is incredible. To tell you the truth, it was also kind of inspiration for me when I was producing my record with Sia," he added of the track "Titanium" off his upcoming Nothing But the Beat. "It's totally different, but it's just a mood and using acoustic elements and mixing it with my style of course. I was listening to her record and thinking I would love to introduce a mood like this."

SHM's Steve Angello said, "It's one of those songs. She's an amazing artist and she has a very strong voice and obviously she means what she was singing. If you think about it, most artists out there, they get a record and they just go in there and record it — they don't know what it's about. They don't give a sh--. But Adele, she means it. She's the real f---ing deal, and you can tell."

Chuckie, Hardwell and Norman Doray were also among the Tomorrowland performers documented playing elements of Adele's chart-topping song.

And while Adele-spinning headliners captured the main stage, there were some equally stellar supporting acts among the 469-deep lineup: Richie Hawtin, Afrojack, Wolfgang Gartner, Steve Aoki, Nervo, Sander Van Doorn, Carl Cox, Paul Van Dyk, Fedde Le Grand and Martin Solveig were but a few of the memorable performers over the weekend.

Young Jeezy Reflects On Thug Motivation 101 Debut

'I wanted to take everybody back,' Jeezy tells MTV news of staging album-anniversary concerts in NYC and ATL.

Young Jeezy sure knows how to throw a birthday bash. To celebrate the six-year anniversary of the release of his 2005 debut album, Let's Get It: Thug Motivation 101, Jeezy staged a pair of concerts, one in New York City on Monday, and a second on Tuesday, which was actually the anniversary of the album, in Atlanta.

"It felt good to see the city out, givin' everybody something to dress up for, get out have a good time," the Snowman told MTV News on Tuesday while backstage at his ATL show. "It was definitely a lot of thug motivatin' going on. Everybody was there for one reason: We were celebrating. It was a celebration.

"I just wanted to put somethin' together that was special," he said of the tribute shows. "Music is so different nowadays from when I came out. An album would last two or three years, especially when you have a classic like I do," he added with a chuckle.

In NYC, Jeezy thrilled concertgoers as he ran through the TM 101 track list, bringing out special guests like Jay-Z, Kanye West, Bun B, Fabolous and the LOX during the 80-minute show. And for Atlanta, Jizzle brought out Yo Gotti and Lil Scrappy.

"I got a lot of what I call family in this industry. It's a lot of cats that came from the same walk of life that I came from and we really rock like that," Jeezy said about his star-studded guest list. "We just show that support for each other. I've been on tour with a lot of these cats and kick it on the phone with them daily, so it's phone calls, two, three phone calls," he said of getting his rap-star friends to participate.

When it was released in 2005, Let's Get It: Thug Motivation 101 helped usher in a brand of drug-related, trap rap that has become prevalent in hip-hop in the past six years. Things have definitely changed since Jeezy made his first splash, but he believes his album represents a specific time in hip-hop that may never return.

" '05 was a beautiful year — for the economy, for the people, for the hood, just working-class, even if you were a street hustler," Young Jeezy said of his rookie year in rap. "The world is a different place now, so I wanted to take everybody back and give them that feeling, because it's hard out here. At the same time, just that in the back of your head, knowing when this music was playing what you were doing, help you get through your day again, still motivation."

During his set in NY, Jeezy announced that his long awaited TM 103 will be released on September 20, and on Tuesday, he announced a 26-ctiy tour that will begin in New Orleans on July 31, concluding in Seattle on September 2.

Ryan Gosling or George Clooney Who Is Hotter?

The poster for the political drama The Ides of March has been revealed showing the faces of Ryan Gosling and George Clooney morphed together. Seeing these two together got me wondering who is hotter? Both Ryan Gosling and George Clooney are drop dead gorgeous there is no debating that. However seeing their two faces morphed together, which yes is creepy when you first look at it, really made me ask, who is the better looking of the two? Or are they both equally hot? A simple question yet a loaded one at the same time. Before this debate gets started I am of course going to give you my thoughts on this topic that I have created. I have been a fan of Clooney?s since he was on The Facts of Life back in the day, showing my age but I loved him on that show. I think he is very talented and of course extremely good looking. All of that being said I would hands down without a doubt pick Ryan Gosling as the hotter one of the two men. George haters let the comments begin. There is just something about the amazingly talented and oh so fine Gosling [...]

Amy Winehouse 'Had A Huge Heart,' Producer Salaam Remi Says

Remi opens up about working with Winehouse on third album, which is not complete.
By James Montgomery, with reporting by Kim Kane

Salaam Remi was already an established producer before he met a then-unknown singer named Amy Winehouse, having already created hits for the likes of Nas, the Fugees and Ini Kamoze (to name just a few). But from the minute he was introduced to Winehouse in 2002, his life — and career — were forever changed. Because not only did he produce the lion's share of her recorded work (her 2003 debut Frank and the follow up, 2006's iconic Back to Black), but he became a close friend with the mercurial Winehouse too, a confidant who knew her better than most.

So when Winehouse died on Saturday in her London home, it was somewhat fitting that Remi was nearby: in town to attend the wedding of the singer's former manager. In fact, he had planned on stopping by Winehouse's apartment that day to catch up with the singer.

MTV celebrates Amy Winehouse's music with a special show tonight.

Days after Winehouse's death, Remi spoke via telephone with New York's Power 105.1 host Kim Kane about the loss of his dear friend and the status of her new album. Kane was kind enough to share their conversation with MTV News.

"We were working on it; it's not a complete album," Remi said, debunking reports that her third LP was finished and slated for release. "We had a lot of things going, there are recordings, but first things first, I think. We're trying to focus on what's at hand and what her family wants to do. So those reports [that there is finished material] are false."

Read more about Amy Winehouse's influence on music beyond "Rehab."

Remi also told Kane that despite near-constant speculation about Winehouse's health, he believed that she was well enough to complete her new album and was actually using the ongoing recording sessions as a sort of therapy, channeling her emotions and frustrations into her songs.

"To put it all in a nutshell, Amy loved to sing, to write ... that ability never left her," he said. "She was very good at channeling her emotions into lyrics, and then being able to sing them. She was in a place to go forward and make it happen. ... The way that Amy and I always created was, she would write and we would toss ideas around."

And though details surrounding Winehouse's death remain murky, Remi said that he's trying very hard to block out the near-constant media coverage of her passing and focus instead on the private moments the two shared in the studio. Those moments revealed the artist few ever knew: opinionated, funny and, above all else, caring.

"Amy had strong opinions on everything. .... She was very opinionated about what she liked. At the end, she was a real person," he said. "She had a huge heart. We'd be working for hours and she would have everybody in the room snickering. She always had a joke. You could hear a lot of that in her lyrics, she could be sarcastic and she was extremely witty ... but more than anything else she was a real person, an individual artist."

Celebrate Amy Winehouse on Wednesday night (July 27) at 6:30 p.m. ET/PT, when MTV will air an encore presentation of a performance she taped in the MTV studios in 2007.

Nicki Minaj Is A 'Great Artist,' Britney Spears Says

'I think she has a distinct sound when she raps,' Spears says of Femme Fatale Tour opening act.
By Christina Garibaldi

When the news that Britney Spears was taking MC Nicki Minaj on the road with her hit, fans — and Brit herself — couldn't have been more excited. The Femme Fatale Tour is now in full swing, with both women bringing their A-game to each performance. And along the way, it seems as if these two have sparked a friendship.

"I think she's great," Spears told MTV News of Minaj. "She's a great artist in every way and I'm really happy for her."

Minaj, who is nominated for three Video Music Awards, brings her own flair to the girl-power tour, adding her eccentric style, her fiery wigs and, of course, her signature beats.

"I think she has a distinct sound when she raps," Spears said. "It really stands out and sets her apart from everyone else. I'm happy she's able to be on tour with me because that's just amazing."

Last month, we caught up with Minaj just before she hit the road with the pop veteran, and she was ready to take that distinct sound to a whole new fanbase.

"I'm just trying to put more theater on that stage. So much to me is music, but it's also about putting on a show, so that's my goal: to truly put on a show and incorporate theater and dance," Minaj said.

And if you're lucky, you might just catch Spears and Minaj teaming up for a special performance of the remix for "Till the World Ends."

"At the end of the show, the last song she comes on every once in awhile," Spears said of Minaj joining her onstage. "Not every show, but it's usually special when she does it."

Will you see Britney and Nicki on tour this summer? Let us know in the comments.

Crystal Harris Talks Sex with Hugh Hefner

Crystal Harris Talks Sex with Hugh Hefner

Crystal Harris ended her future with Hugh Hefner when she dumped him five days before their wedding. But that doesn't mean the runaway bride is finished dishing about their relationship!

In a recent appearance on Howard Stern's Sirius XM radio show, the 25-year-old Playmate revealed intimate details about her sex life with the 85-year-old mogul. And, as expected, their bedroom time left much to be desired.

Harris claims that they had intercourse just once, and that it lasted "like two seconds." Not surprisingly, their lacking sex life contributed to her desire to get out of the relationship.

"I was just over it," she says. "I was like, 'Ahhh.' I was over it. I just like, walked away. I'm not turned on by Hef, sorry...He doesn't really take off his clothes. I've never seen Hef naked."

So last month, just days before they were set to wed, Harris walked out on the Playboy mogul.

"After much deep reflection and thought I have decided to end my engagement with Hef," Harris wrote on her website. "I have the utmost respect for Hef and wish him the best going forward. I hope the media will give each of us the privacy we deserve during this time."

Since parting ways from Hefner, Harris has been seen getting cozy with Dr. Phil's son, Jordan McGraw. Though she insists their relationship is strictly platonic, the couple was spotted out in N.Y.C. recently, looking very close.

"They were joined by two women who stayed for about an hour," a witness told People.com. "Crystal was drinking mojitos and laughing, and Jordan was sipping a drink on the rocks. But once their friends left, they really settled in and seemed more and more comfortable."

Amy Winehouse Funeral

Amy Winehouse Funeral

The friends and family of singer Amy Winehouse, who died Saturday at age 27, gathered for her funeral in London on Tuesday morning -- three days after her death, which is in keeping with Jewish tradition.

The ceremony was held at Edgewarebury Cemetery in the Golders Green area of London. And according to Radar Online, Winehouse's parents, Janis and Mitch, her brother Alex and her boyfriend Reg Traviss were among the 150 people in attendance. Also there were pals Kelly Osbourne -- who wore her hair in Winehouse's signature beehive style -- and Mark Ronson, producer of Winehouse's 2006 album Back in Black (and the brother of Samantha Ronson). Winehouse's ex-husband Blake Fielder-Civil -- who is currently serving 32 months in jail on a violent crimes charge -- was not allowed out of prison for the funeral.

TMZ reports that Mitch Winehouse delivered a touching eulogy, sharing stories from Amy's childhood and telling his daughter, "Goodnight, my angel. Sleep tight. Mommy and Daddy love you ever so much." The 45-minute ceremony, which included prayers in both Hebrew and English, ended with Carole King's "So Far Away," an Amy favorite that she once performed as a duet with her father. "Mitch encouraged everyone to sing to it and they did," a rep for Winehouse told People. "People sang."

Following the ceremony, mourners headed to the Golders Green crematorium, where Winehouse was to be cremated. "I think because her grandmother was cremated at the same place, so it was a family tradition to be cremated," the singer's rep told People. Some of Winehouse's ashes reportedly will be scattered with those of her grandmother Cynthia, who died of lung cancer five years ago.

The funeral may help bring peace to Winehouse's loved ones, but they don't have closure yet. An autopsy on Monday was supposed to determine how Winehouse died, but according to the Associated Press, the results were inconclusive. London police have announced that they are awaiting the results of "further toxicology tests," which will take two to four weeks.

Winehouse's death is widely assumed to be related to her very public struggle with drug and alcohol addiction, but the police have presented no evidence to support that theory. Although U.K. newspaper the Daily Mirror reported that Winehouse's friends and family say she died of alcohol and ecstasy use, an anonymous police source told People that Winehouse was not surrounded by paraphernalia or signs of drugs when she passed away.

For his part, Mitch Winehouse believes his daughter was happy when she died. "Amy was the greatest daughter, family member and friend you could ever have. I will talk a lot about her fantastic recovery," Mitch said in a statement to E!'s Mark Malkin. "Recently Amy found love with Reg. He helped her with her problems and Amy was looking forward to their future together. She was the happiest she has been for years."

What's more, Mitch insists that Amy was on the road to kicking her addictions. "3 years ago, Amy conquered her drug dependency, the doctors said it was impossible but she really did it. She was trying hard to deal with her drinking and had just completed 3 weeks of abstinence," he reveals. "She said, 'Dad I've had enough, I can't stand the look on your and the family's faces anymore.'"

As for the night Amy died, Mitch had this to say: "She was not depressed. She saw Janis and Reg on Friday and was in good spirits. That night, she was in her room, playing drums and singing. As it was late, her security guard said to keep it quiet and she did. He heard her walking around for a while and when he went to check on her in the morning he thought she was asleep. He went back a few hours later, that was when he realized she was not breathing and called for help. But knowing she wasn't depressed, knowing she passed away, knowing she passed away happy, it makes us all feel better."

In the statement, Mitch also reveals plans to start the Amy Winehouse Foundation, which he calls "something to help the things she loved -- children, horses, but also to help those struggling with substance abuse. In this country, if you cannot afford a private rehabilitation clinic, there is a two year waiting list for help. With the help of Keith Vaz MP, we are trying to change that."

The singer-songwriter's death has also left questions about her unreleased recordings. Though her musical influence was tremendous, Winehouse only released two studio albums before she passed away. MTV News reports that she had been working on a reported follow-up to 2006's Back in Black for the past two years. It's unknown how many finished songs she actually recorded -- or, indeed, if she recorded any.

Music lovers are now holding their collective breath, hoping that there's another Amy Winehouse album still to come. For now, the world is revisiting her familiar songs: Back in Black is currently No. 1 on the iTunes charts.

Britney Spears, Adele And More Best Songs Of 2011 (So Far)

Tracks from Beyoncé, Katy Perry and Kreayshawn also make Bigger Than the Sound's midyear report card.
By James Montgomery

Best Songs of 2011 (so far)
Photo: MTV News

Last week, when I listed the Best Albums of 2011 (So Far), I expected to receive a fair amount of acrimony (it's what happens when you eschew Britney Spears in favor of F---ed Up's David Comes to Life), and, of course, I did.

But mixed in with all the hate were a few requests for me to do a similar list of my favorite songs too. So, not wanting to disappoint my fans (Hi, Mom!), I've done just that: Here are my picks for the Best Songs of 2011 (So Far), 20 tracks that have defined the first half of the year for me. Not all of them were actually released in 2011, but all of them have managed to make an impact in some way, be it on the charts, the blogs or in the ever-expanding "weird song" quadrant of my mind.

What's your pick for the Best Song of the Year (So Far)? Vote now in our Newsroom poll!

I'm sure you'll take issue with some of my selections, so if there's a song I've missed, let me know about it in the comments below. And, yes, just to head you off at the pass, Britney made the list this time around. So, without further ado, here's my top 20:

20. My Morning Jacket, "Holdin' on to Black Metal": Or, as you probably know it, "the song that includes portions of Kwan Jai and Kwan Jit Sriprajan's 'E-Saew Tam Punha Huajai.' " Delightfully oddball sorta-funk/ Siamese soul from Louisville, Kentucky.

19. Beastie Boys, "Make Some Noise": Vocal nods to their License to Ill party phase. Rattling boom-bap from their Check Your Head days. Cowbell break courtesy of Paul's Boutique. Welcome back. To the future.

18. Peter Bjorn and John, "Second Chance": Airtight Swedes ditch the whistling and plow headlong into rollicking, retro-leaning rock. The chorus may not be better than "Young Folks," but, hey, there's a guitar solo!

17. Cage the Elephant, "Around My Head": Hey, you guys like the Pixies? Cool, I do too! Maybe we can hang out sometime?

16. Against Me!, "Russian Spies": Searing, surging punk from Gainesville, Florida, lifers Against Me!, it proves that their time on Sire Records didn't soften them one bit. It only made them more resolute. And, strangely, sadder too.

15. Black Lips, "Modern Art": Without question, the best song you'll hear all year about taking drugs and looking at art. Oh, like you haven't tried it.

14. Lil Wayne (featuring Cory Gunz), "6 Foot 7 Foot": I can't even begin to comprehend the ongoing drama between Wayne and producer Bangladesh, but there's no denying the fact that both men are better off together. Knotty and slightly seizure-inducing, like "A Milli" times, well, a million.

13. YACHT, "Dystopia (The Earth Is on Fire)": Every day the sky gets lower (lowerlowerlower!). And every day the flames get higher (higherhigherhigher!). So, with apologies to Rock Master Scott and the Dynamic Three, the disco duo just decide to let the mother----er burn.

12. Chris Brown, "Beautiful People": Regardless of what you may think of Breezy, you probably cannot deny the sublimely subtle genius of this track. Then again, maybe you can. And, y'know, your loss.

11. Washed Out, "Eyes Be Closed": Massively ebbing and echoing bed-tronica (don't call it "chillwave") from some dude in Perry, Georgia. Bonus: Sounds nothing like Perry, Georgia.

10. Beyoncé, "Run the World (Girls)": I am an unabashed fan of "crazy" Beyoncé (you know, the one who shows up on tracks like "Ring the Alarm," "Get Me Bodied" and, of course, "Single Ladies"), so there's no way I could overlook "Girls," the single craziest moment on her decidedly straightforward 4 album. From the Major Lazer sample to the Warrior Princess video to the part where she growls "Houston, Texas, babay," it may have confounded some of her fans, but to me, it was psychotic pop perfection.

9. Bright Eyes, "Ladder Song": For as much noise as Conor Oberst is capable of making, it's the quieter moments where his rickety, ramshackle genius really shines through. And "Ladder Song" — a heartbreakingly raw tribute to a friend who committed suicide — is among his quietest. And his best. Backed by little more than a piano and a handful of otherworldly noises, Oberst plumbs the depths of despair, his voice reedy, wavering, but pure and, when he reaches bottom, discovers there are small beauties that make life worth living. It's too bad, he ultimately laments, that his friend didn't discover them too. You won't hear a more achingly beautiful song this year, I promise.

8. Lykke Li, "Get Some": Bewitching, otherworldly single from Li's Wounded Rhymes album, it would be sexy even if she wasn't calling herself your prostitute. The drums thump, the bass vibrates and the guitar stings — and then Li pushes the whole thing over the top with her smoldering, sumptuous vocals. The kind of song that requires a cigarette and a cold shower after repeat listens.

7. Foster the People, "Pumped Up Kicks": The year's catchiest rock tune was actually last year's catchiest too; it just took people a while to catch on. Hazy, loping and scratchy like a mohair sweater, it recalls a headier era, when bands wrote ultra-hooky singles about ultra-dark subject matter (Eels' "Novocaine for the Soul," the Smashing Pumpkins "Today," etc.) and no one seemed to care. Also known as the 1990s.

6. Kreayshawn, "Gucci Gucci": Either the smartest song of 2011 or the dumbest, the beauty of "Gucci Gucci" — and Bay Area "Based Goddess" Kreayshawn, for that matter — lies in the fact that it's probably both, but it doesn't care one bit. Folks can kvetch about sticky subjects like "authenticity," but I prefer to just listen to the music: the goofy horror-movie synth squiggle, the dollops of low-end whomp, the part where Kreay claims to have swag coming out her ovaries — it's all good. Even if it's not.

5. Nicola Roberts, "Beat of My Drum": Sublimely saccharine single from erstwhile Girls Aloud member that mashes together every notable pop moment from recent history, yet somehow manages to be better than the sum of its parts. Dancehall rhythms? Check. Drum breaks? Yep. Electro-vocal tics? And how. It's all courtesy of producers Diplo and Dimitri Tikovoi, though the real power lies in the supercharged sing-a-long chorus — arguably the year's best — where the whole thing comes together into a head-spinning rush and Roberts positively blossoms. She should go solo more often.

4. Katy Perry (featuring Kanye West), "ET": The California Gurl turns space-pop princess, with glorious results. "ET" bloops and bleeps like a satellite in eternal, icy orbit (or a malfunctioning digital watch), and the chorus burns like Spacelab descending through the atmosphere. Also, it's about sex. Sure, 'Ye's verses may be phoned in — he'll probe you if you'll let him — but even they can't dim the wattage of this brightly shining star. Appropriately, it's become a galactic hit, though one can't help but wonder what would've happened if Three 6 Mafia had gotten their hands on it first.

3. Britney Spears, "Till the World Ends": The final stage of grief is acceptance, after all.

2. Lady Gaga, "Heavy Metal Lover": It's buried toward the back of Born This Way, an odd choice considering it's far and away the best song on the album (even better than "The Edge of Glory.") A masterful mix of "Transformers"-sized techno whomp and supple, slipstream synthesizers, it pulses and twitches, expands and contracts and, quiet as it's kept, is probably the best example of what we all hoped BTW would be. As an added bonus, "I want your whiskey mouth/ All over my blond south" may very well be the line of the year too.

1. Adele, "Rolling in the Deep": Unquestionably the song of 2011, a crackling, breathy thing that roils along on a stubby guitar line and some primal pounding, then positively roars to life the second the chorus hits. There's little else at play here, but when you're building with blocks like Rick Rubin's raw production and Adele's prodigious pipes (and the powerful range of emotions they conjure up), they sky really is the limit. The fact that it's a crossover smash (true story, this weekend I heard it 10 times on three different radio stations) is merely icing on top of the cake at this point, not to mention a blow against the creeping, Auto-Tuned insurgency that threatens our nation's airwaves. Sometimes all it takes is one deceptively, devastatingly simple song to turn the tide.
